We are often asked how we travel the world on a budget, so we thought that we would write this article. Here are the apps and websites that we use when traveling to keep our costs low. Whether it is a backpacking trip or a holiday that you are planning, these budget travel hacks could save you hundreds.
However, before we start, we know that everybody dreams of traveling but they just do not know where to begin. If this sounds like you, then we have you covered.
- Want to travel? Here is how to plan your trip
- Backpacking tips: How to travel the world on the cheap
These two articles along with this Budget Travel post will teach you not only how to plan a trip, but also how to travel on a budget.
And one last thing before we start. To travel cheap, means that you must travel to inexpensive destinations. India is one of the cheapest countries on the planet. In our India section, we will show you how you can have the adventure of a lifetime for less than $15 a day.
How To Find Cheap Airfare
These sites will make sure that you find the cheapest possible airfare. You should always check more than one site to compare as you will often find different prices on each site.
Also, turn off your browsing history when checking these sites. If you check a certain route too many times the price magically seems to rise. We found that Skyscanner is one of the worst offenders for this little trick, they are still included in our list as they can often be a great start point to get a general idea of costs.
Click on the site links below, compare each of them, and we guarantee that you will find the cheapest deal.
How To Find Cheap Accommodation
These sites are our favourites for finding accommodation all throughout the world. Using these companies you will always be guaranteed the best deal.
Again, always check more than one of the sites to compare, because often the Hotels/Guesthouses/Hostels add different prices to different sites depending on the rates of their competition.
Couchsurfing is a little different to the sites above. This is a budget travel website that allows you to stay on people’s couches for free. It is both safe and great way to save money while also meeting locals, who like nothing better than interacting with fellow travelers (most hosts on the site are travelers themselves).
Couchsurfing is also a great way to see a city, as locals know far more than any guide book ever could.
How To Find Cheap Transportation
For transportation here are the sites that we could not live without.
The Man in Seat 61 is the best guide to train travel anywhere in the world. They have the most comprehensive information on routes, times, prices, and train conditions.
Rome2Rio allows you to see how to get from point A to point B the cheapest way possible. Just enter your departure and arrival destinations and it will give you all the bus, train, plane, or boat routes available, as well as how much they cost.
If it is a ferry that you wish to catch, we always check direct ferries first. They provide bookings for ferry crossings all over the world and always have great deals.
Navigation: Find Your Way
When arriving in a new city or even just trying to find the local tourist sites, there is nothing better than online navigation. Gone are the days of walking around with a giant map, blowing in the wind, nowadays at the push of a button we can find exactly where we want to go.
Google maps is one of the best navigation systems in the world, constantly updated this app is a must have when traveling.
Maps.Me is our favourite navigation tool to use. Its ofline routing is a dream when arriving in a new city. All you need to do is quickly download the mapping and routing of a country when you are online and afterwards you have full routing to wherever you want to go, with no internet connection needed.
Miscellaneous
Here are a few other great apps and sites that we think will help you on your travels:
Tripadvisor is the largest travel website in the world and is a great place to visit to find all of the best tours, restaurants, attractions and activities all reviewed by other travelers.
Lonely Planet is the number one website for budget travel guidebooks. It is a great site for reading up on information for almost any destination in the world.
Here you can find travel partners, rideshares, jobs, second hand gear and much more. It is an amazing website for travelers of all kind and a brilliant resource for countries such as Australia.
Do be aware when using Gumtree that each country has its own site. So to find the right site for you type, Gumtree, and then the country that you wish to search.
RailEurope is the best website to use when traveling through Europe by train. If your trip around Europe involves taking trains, get a railpass, you will save hundreds of dollars.
And finally Facebook. Facebook Groups are some of the best places to find budget travel information. A group filled with members who have traveled your routes are the best people to ask for information. We always check Facebook for groups on our destination, they are a treasure trove of knowledge.
